Having read dozens of translations I have to say I agree with those in the clarity over scholarship camp. As a Tai Chi practitioner, I'm extremely interested in the Taoist classics, and how they inform us on a practical level. Steven's rendering, while admittedly not a direct translation, does a brilliant job of making the obscure understandable to modern readers, especially westerners. I've read plenty of direct translations, and they've all left me a little cold. This book is a gem!

Scientists discovered that each person is a bio-machine with an individual program (or "software"). All human programs are recorded in an ancien Chinese manuscript called "Shan Hai Jing" ("Collection of the Mountains and Seas"). It was also discovered that "I Ching" and "Tao Te Ching" are commentaries to "Shan Hai Jing".

I had been on a path using Buddhism (namely the culture-stripped, "brass tacks" version from Steve Hagan, which I love) for about five years. In that time, I had made a point of daily practice, in traffic jams, at work, etc...anywhere really. And it was beneficial. Then recently "Tao" kept popping up in my mind: I had heard about Tao-this and Tao-of-that and wanted to read Tao Te Ching.
This translation knocked my practice of be-in-this-very-moment/just-see espoused by Hagan *out of the park.* It represented a quantum leap - or five - in practice of these principles. It carried with it a new set of instant results (the very best kind) that I also got - for example - from "The Power of Now" by Eckhart Tolle.
I studied this translation alongside the Gia-Fu Feng/Jane English translation, another one which is really good but that retains a fair amount of the attempts to juggle ancient Chinese idioms into English, which I think is not always helpful insofar as "conveying the true spirit of the message" is concerned. The mark of a helpful book is one that improves a person in actual fact. This one does that.
Extraordinary and helpful that he brings his Zen understandings to the text. Extremely helpful to my daily life.

Tao Te Ching Stephen Mitchell
Subtle contradictions of thought that neutralize each other.
A centering of the ball, so to speak like a ball in a turn and slip indicator in a light aircraft.
Step on the ball left or right bringing it to center, irregardless.
Tao: calming, contemplative, restfull bits of information providing a majesty available for us all.

many years ago, i picked up stephen mitchell's translation of this classic work. it was my introduction to a new way of seeing in the world and truly shaped the journey ahead. this book is subtle, powerful and deeply moving when one takes the time to breathe it in! thank you stephen mitchell!
