Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.com Review
Consistently lauded for its lively, readable prose, this revised and updated edition of A People's History of the United States turns traditional textbook history on its head. Howard Zinn infuses the often-submerged voices of blacks, women, American Indians, war resisters, and poor laborers of all nationalities into this thorough narrative that spans American history from Christopher Columbus's arrival to an afterword on the Clinton presidency.

Addressing his trademark reversals of perspective, Zinn--a teacher, historian, and social activist for more than 20 years--explains, "My point is not that we must, in telling history, accuse, judge, condemn Columbus in absentia. It is too late for that; it would be a useless scholarly exercise in morality. But the easy acceptance of atrocities as a deplorable but necessary price to pay for progress (Hiroshima and Vietnam, to save Western civilization; Kronstadt and Hungary, to save socialism; nuclear proliferation, to save us all)--that is still with us. One reason these atrocities are still with us is that we have learned to bury them in a mass of other facts, as radioactive wastes are buried in containers in the earth."

If your last experience of American history was brought to you by junior high school textbooks--or even if you're a specialist--get ready for the other side of stories you may not even have heard. With its vivid descriptions of rarely noted events, A People's History of the United States is required reading for anyone who wants to take a fresh look at the rich, rocky history of America.

Product Description

Known for its lively, clear prose as well as its scholarly research, A People's History of the United States is the only volume to tell America's story from the point of view of -- and in the words of -- America's women, factory workers, African-Americans, Native Americans, working poor, and immigrant laborers.

This P.S. edition features an extra 16 pages of insights into the book, including author interviews, recommended reading, and more.

5 out of 5 stars Everyone should read this   September 6, 2010

Zinn tells the real story of history. Millions have read this book, but it should be read by the rest of the country. If so, the people would rise up and throw out the corporate-welfare loving politicians and devote our national wealth to real purposes instead of the corporate profits of the weapons makers.

4 out of 5 stars A necessary alternative to everything you learned in history class   September 6, 2010

I think every student in America should have to read this book! It's really left, but it exposes the other sides of the stories that we're all way too familiar with - the american revolution, the institution of slavery, the civil war, industrialization, etc etc. It exposes the long history of the social justice movements that are either completely left out, glossed over, or mis-credited in standard American history books. If you want to learn more about the oppression of Native Americans, women, Africans, European Immigrants, farm workers, railroad workers, etc and how all these folks fought back - read Zinn!

5 out of 5 stars Time to review what you think you know about history of U.S.   September 5, 2010

This book is an "eye-opener". Think about what you learned in school about our history. Then set all that aside and read this book with an open mind. It's amazing what was left out of our history books and classes. This is a good read. It is easy to read and keeps the reader thoroughly involved. Everyone should take time to read it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent history   September 5, 2010

It is refreshing to read a work that is free of partisan bias - honesty in its treatment of native
Americans. There is no whitewash in its treatment of the Vietnam debacle. I higholy recommend it.

Howard Zinn captures the history of America that is left out of classrooms. A People's History of the United States could be used as a textbook or a "start to finish", either way it is very informative and entertaining.
