Product Description
William C. Martin has freshly reinterpreted the Tao Te Ching to speak directly and clearly to the most difficult of modern tasks -- parenting. With its combination of free verse and judicious advice, The Parent's Tao Te Ching addresses the great themes that permeate the Tao and that support loving parent- child relationships: responding without judgment, emulating natural processes, and balancing between doing and being.

5 out of 5 stars Work on yourself and lead children by example...   August 9, 2010
Alain B. Burrese (Missoula, MT)
I have always enjoyed reading various editions of "The Tao Te Ching." I find the words calming and stimulating at the same time. Calming in the peaceful nature of the lessons. Stimulating in that the passages cause me to reflect on my own life and actions and how they relate to the world around me. When I saw "The Parent's Tao Te Ching: Ancient Advice for Modern Parents" by William Martin, I was intrigued. As a parent now, I was interested, where before becoming a father, this edition wouldn't have caused me a second glance. (To be expected, right?) However, what sold me on the book was seeing it had a forward by Dan Millman. Millman's "Way of the Peaceful Warrior" is one of my favorite books, and I've enjoyed all of his books and audio programs. So I bought it, and am very glad I did. I wasn't sure what to expect, but what I found was an enjoyable, peaceful read, with a lot of practical wisdom for raising children, regardless of time, place, or beliefs.

Martin has written a book that captures the essence of the original "Tao Te Ching," but speaks directly toward parenting. The advice advocates patience, compassion, simplicity, and parental awareness, but what I found most prevalent in the passages was a message of first seeing you are living in accordance with the sound principles, and your children will then follow along. Basically, lead by example, and the book provides examples based on the ancient wisdom contained in the original text.

Because of this, I found myself thinking and pondering about my own actions, and how what I do influences my daughter, more, most likely, than some of what I say. In this aspect, reading this version was similar to reading other versions, in that it caused me to reflect upon my actions and their impact on the world around me. However, the world around me focused more on my daughter. So on one hand, the reflecting was similar, but on the other, it took on a whole new look when placed in the context of being a father.

I again agree with Millman when he says that few things in this world are as important as raising children. I also agree that this book contains universal wisdom that can remind us of who we can become as we artfully help our children grow and become adults themselves.

If you are a parent and have ever enjoyed reading "The Tao Te Ching," I'm sure you'll enjoy this book, just as I did. If you are looking for parenting advice of a different kind than most of the books out there, this may be just what you are looking for. I know I enjoyed it, and now it's time to implement the wisdom into my daily life to be a better person, in order to be a better parent.

5 out of 5 stars The Parent's Tao Te Ching   May 24, 2010
Susan Graham
The Parent's Tao Te Ching is thought provoking and realistic. It is simple wisdom and truth for all people of all ages with or without children. It provides reminders of how to respect ourselves and each other. This book actually gives simple The Parent's Tao Te Ching: Ancient Advice for Modern Parentsexamples of what works and what does not; how best to respond. I have given and will continue to gift this book to people I love.

5 out of 5 stars The Path to Wise Parenting   March 21, 2010
Greg Klinkel (Boulder, CO USA)
This is not the Tao Te Ching, but it is an excellent collection of parental wisdom that is rooted in the philosophy of the Tao Te Ching.

I wish that I had this book when I became a parent. My children are now grown, but I am learning from this book; we never "finish" being a parent, and it is never too late to learn and to improve. I gave this book to my daughter, and I plan to give it to other new parents as well.

If you are looking for a translation of the Tao Te Ching, look elsewhere. The author points out in his introduction that this is not a translation, but rather an interpretation of what the author believes to be the essential wisdom of that work applied to parenthood. Click on the book to read inside, and read the back cover. What you read there is an accurate description of this book.

Yes, it is true that this is not the Tao Te Ching, but it is an excellent source of wisdom for parenting. My advice is that you buy this book, read it, consult it frequently, and learn to follow the path that has always been within you. That is very Tao-like.

4 out of 5 stars Deep thoughts   March 11, 2010

This book is a nice collection of things to contemplate - an opportunity to soul search. I found it hard not to look back on my own childhood and wish my parents had read this and applied it when raising me. I'm just thankful I found it and can give my own children a better growing experience.

5 out of 5 stars Transformational - changed my attitude towards "parenting"   April 16, 2009
M. Shattan (New Canaan, CT United States)
When I recieved this, I read it in starts but it began to creep into my consciousness. After reading so many books on children, I began to take solace in these simple reflections on what it truly means to be a parent. Only in recent decades did the word 'parenting' even become a verb.

Martin translates the 81 poems or songs of the Tao to relate to modern parents. The simple prose and obvious truths resonate, buy you must let them sink in. Read it sparingly, and not necessarily in any order. I've highlighted half my book, sent passages to friends and find myself going back to it often. I have given many copies of this book to new parents.

Here are just a few examples:

#22 If you want them to have much, show them how to enjoy little.

#67 teach your children compassion, pateince and simplicity ... some say this is absurd. Thy would teach instead, ambition, drive and consumption.

#76 Children become confused when parents become rigid, holding rules above love. Be consistently flexible. Hold tight only to compassion.

28 If you complain about politics.... your children will learn to whine instead of laugh

52 Seeing your pain, they forget as well and everyone is in darkness.

Imagine, if #67 were true, and a child were a patient, compassionate and simple being, oh what a joy! What a rarity in today's high self esteem, over scheduled and all-about-me culture.

It transformed me and the type of person I've become. Enjoy.
